On this day in 1533...

On 26th July 1533, the Spanish killed the Inca emperor Atahualpa by garrotting him. They threw the body in an unmarked grave, which devastated the Incas as the emperor needed to be mummified in order for his soul to pass over into the next stage of life and for his son Topatauchi to succeed him as emperor. This historical moment affected the lives of everyone throughout the Inca Empire. NB: Some historians state that the date was actually 28th August 1533.
